In Nepal’s Worst Air Tragedy in 30 Years, 5 Indians Among 72 Killed

Four of the deceased Indians are from Uttar Pradesh. One is from Bihar.

New Delhi: All 72 people aboard were killed on Sunday, January 15, in a plane crash at Nepal’s Pokhara.

The Yeti Airlines flight had set out from Nepal’s capital of Kathmandu and crashed while trying to land at a newly-built airport in Pokhara. This is Nepal’s worst air tragedy in three decades, Reuters reports.

Among the deceased are Nepalese citizens, and five people from India, four Russians, two Koreans, and one person each from Australia, Argentina, Ireland and France.

The remains of 68 people on the 72-seater flight were recovered before authorities called off the search operation for the day on Sunday.

“We haven’t rescued anyone alive from the crash site,” NDTV quoted Nepal Army Spokesperson Krishna Prasad Bhandari as having said.

News agency ANI reports Ghazipur District Magistrate Aryaka Akhouri as having said that four young men of the district, Vishal Sharma, Sonu Jaiswal, Anil Rajbhar and Abhishek Kushwaha were travelling in the plane.

Reports have said that Sonu Jaiswal was broadcasting live on Facebook at the time of the crash.

The fifth Indian who has passed away is Sanjay Jaiswal from Bihar’s Sitamarhi.
