New Delhi: TheĀ United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) has denied any role in the November 1 killing of five youths inĀ Assam’s Tinsukia district. The organisation had been suspected as being behind the attack.
In a press statement issued November 2, ULFA-I clarified to “all concerned authorities” that the organisation “does not have any involvement in the firing incident”
The incident took place at around 8:55 pm at Kherbari village, around 6 km from the Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola-Sadiya bridge) under the Dhola police station in Tinsukia district. Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to nab the killers.
The youths were reportedly sitting in a shop near Sadiya town when the suspected militants picked them up and took them to the banks of the Brahmaputra river. They then lined up the youths and killed them one by one, News18 reported officials as saying.
The deceased youths have been identified as Subal Das, Shyamol Biswas, Avinash Biswas, Ananta Biswas and Dhananjay Namasudra.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the killing of the innocent youths, and has asked the state director general of police (DGP) Kula Saikia and ADGP Mukesh Agarwal to rush to the incident site to take stock of the situation.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the killing. “We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia and the killing of Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinas Biswas, Subodh Das and Dhananjay Namashudra. Is this the outcome of the recent NRC development? We have no words to express our deep sorrow to the grieving families. The perpetrators must be punished at the very earliest,” Banerjee tweeted.
The Trinamool Congress will organise rallies in different parts of North and South Bengal, including Siliguri and Kolkata, on Friday protesting against the brutal killings, Banerjee tweeted.
