The ‘Humans of Hindutva’ Facebook page came into existence in 2016, after the Narendra Modi-led BJP government decided to demonetise high-value currency notes and in-effect withdrew nearly 86% of Indian currency in circulation at the time. The page was a parody of the famous ‘Humans of New York’ and the ‘Humans of Bombay’ page, and posted political memes.
In this brief chat with comedian Kunal Kamra, the page admin, who wishes to remain anonymous, because of death threats that he has been receiving by Hindutva organisations, alleges that Facebook has shown prejudice against his page. Although he shut down the page voluntarily, he says that Facebook curtailed his reach and sent him false notices which temporarily suspended his page several times – all because he posted memes about Hindutva fanatics.
In 2017, the Humans of Hindutva admin wrote an article for The Wire where he described how Facebook increasingly became a platform for people who wish to divide people, and not for those who ridicule these divisive tactics.
