Gonda, Uttar Pradesh: Two men in their early twenties were arrested for slaughtering a cow in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

Speaking to The Wire, police circle officer of Gonda K.P. Singh said that they arrested Ram Sewak Tiwari (20) and Mangal Dixit (24) while they were slaughtering a cow in Bhatpurwa village in Katra Bazar of the district on Sunday night.

According to the police, the incident was deliberate and was planned keeping in mind the Moharram procession in the village. The police added that the incident was carried out to pollute the communal atmosphere and create a communal riot by spreading the news of cow slaughter.

The two men were arrested for promoting enmity between the communities.

“While the men were killing the cow, locals spotted them and called the police. Villagers alleged that the duo had stolen the cow of a person named Ganesh Prasad, a resident of same area, and were killing it in a nearby field. Both men have been booked under section 295A, 153A, 505B and 3/8 of the Cow Slaughter Act,” Singh told the Wire.

“We are interrogating them and trying to find out the full conspiracy behind the cow slaughter. There must be some bad intention behind their act. We are also going to take action under the National Security Act against them,” he added.
