On August 31, 1995, the then chief minister of Punjab, Beant Singh was killed in an explosion outside the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh.
It was established that Balwant Singh Rajoana, a member of a terrorist organisation called Babbar Khalsa had conspired in the attack.
Rajoana was then sentenced to death by a trial court in 2004. The Home Ministry has now decided to commute the death sentence of Rajoana for the murder of Beant Singh. Rajoana will now be on life imprisonment.
In this video, Professor Apoorvanand talks about the possible reasons for the government to commute a death sentence of the prime accused.
