Terrorists Shoot Dead Kashmiri Woman Teacher in J&K’s Kulgam

This is the seventh targeted killing in Kashmir in the month of May.

New Delhi: Terrorists on Tuesday shot dead a woman Kashmiri teacher in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rajni Bala (36) of Samba in the Jammu region sustained injuries when terrorists fired at her in Gopalpora area of Kulgam where she was posted as a teacher. An injured Bala was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Police officials said the area has been cordoned off and a manhunt launched to track down the assailants.

On May 12, Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit, was shot dead inside the tehsildar’s office in Chadoora tehsil of Budgam district. Bhat’s killing had led to widespread protests by the Kashmiri Pandit community, who said the Union government was failing to provide a secure environment despite directly ruling the union territory.

This is the seventh targeted killing in Kashmir in the month. While three of the victims were off-duty policeman, four were civilians.

Note: PTI had initially quoted officials as having said that Bala was a “migrant Kashmiri Pandit.” An earlier version of this report had thus identified Bala as a Kashmiri Pandit teacher. This has now been removed.
