Kanpur Bloodbath: Gangster Vikas Dubey Arrested in Ujjain

The Uttar Pradesh police have so far killed five aides of the gangster in separate encounters.

New Delhi: Gangster Vikas Dubey, wanted in connection with the killing of eight policemen in Kanpur, has been arrested in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh, according to reports.

Eight policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police, were killed in Bikru village in the Chaubeypur area of Kanpur on July 3. They were on their way to arrest Dubey, who has a long criminal record but received patronage from almost every political party in Uttar Pradesh. He was allegedly alerted by a police source about his impending arrest.

The police had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information that leads to his arrest.

Reports say he visited the Mahakal temple in Ujjain and offered prayers. A guard at the temple reportedly alerted the police, after which he was arrested.

Madhya Pradesh’s minister Narottam Mishra said the arrest is a ‘big success’ for the state’s police. Two associates of the gangster have also been arrested, according to police.

According to The Hindu, Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan spoke to his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath, informing him that Dubey will soon be handed over to the Uttar Pradesh police.

In a tweet, Chouhan said that Dubey’s “sins cannot be washed away by taking shelter at the Mahakal temple”. “Our government is not going to spare any criminal,” he said.

The Uttar Pradesh police have so far killed five persons associated with Dubey in separate police ‘encounters’.

On Thursday, two aides of the gangster were gunned down in separate encounters in Uttar Pradesh. While Kartikeya alias Prabhat was killed in Kanpur when he tried to flee from police custody, another aide of Vikas Dubey, Praveen alias Bauwa Dubey, was shot dead in an encounter in Etawah.
