Elections 2019: EC Says Polls in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore Should Be Cancelled

The EC thinks money has been used to influence voters in the constituency.

New Delhi: The Election Commission has reportedly recommended to the president that the election in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore should be cancelled because money has allegedly been used to influence voters.

At the moment, Vellore elections are supposed to be held on April 18, with the rest of Tamil Nadu.

Over the last two weeks, a spate of IT department cash seizures have been seen from DMK leaders’ residences in the area. The district police had filed a complaint against DMK leader Kathir Anand and two party functionaries based on an IT department report.

Anand was charged under the Representation of People Act for giving “wrong information” in his election affidavit filed along with his nomination papers, police said. The other two, identified as Srinivasan and Damodaran, were booked under bribery charges, according to PTI.

According to the Indian Express, in the probable situation the the president accepts the EC’s recommendation, Vellore will be the first Lok Sabha constituency to see elections cancelled because of abuse of money power.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan is reportedly going to send the recommendation to the Union law ministry for comments on Tuesday.
