‘Bharat Bachao’: Congress Leaders Turn Up Heat on Modi Govt at Delhi Rally

Speeches by Rahul Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sought to highlight the BJP administration’s failings.

New Delhi: In addition to Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that he would rather die than apologise to BJP for ‘speaking the truth’ as he is a Gandhi not a Savarkar, the Congress’s ‘Bharat Bachao’ rally in the national capital saw the party brass tear into the Modi government.

The rally was attended among others by top Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, besides Congress chief ministers Kamal Nath, Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel. However, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was conspicuous by his absence.

At the Ramlila Grounds, while Rahul accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of single-handedly “destroying” the country’s economy, and sought to train focus on the weakened administrative fabric of the country, former prime minister Manmohan Singh alleged that his successor had misled the people by making “lofty promises” which he “failed” to fulfil.

“Six years ago, Narendra Modi showed lofty promises to people. Now it has been proved that all these promises were false and he has failed in fulfilling all the promises made and the people of the country were misled,” he said.

In his brief address, Manmohan Singh urged the people to strengthen the Congress party and the hands of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in order “to take the country forward in the right direction”.

“It is our duty to strengthen the Congress party and strengthen the hands of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, so that we can take the country forward in the real sense” he noted.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi called upon people to fight against injustice and said the Congress party will not step behind and will fulfil its duty of saving the country and its democracy till the last breath.

She also asserted the country will fight against the amended citizenship act as it “shreds” India’s soul.

“Suffering injustice is the biggest crime. It’s time to rise to save democracy and Constitution. The time has come to save the country and we have to struggle hard for it.

“The Modi-Shah government bothers neither about Parliament nor institutions. Their only agenda is to hide real issues and make people fight. They violate the Constitution everyday and then also celebrate Constitution Day,” she said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on the BJP for its “litany of injustices”, and said that those who don’t fight the prevailing situation today will go down in history as cowards.

“If you love India, please raise your voice. If we remain silent today, our revolutionary Constitution will be destroyed. The division of the country will start and we will all be as responsible for this division as any corrupt leader of the BJP and the RSS, she thundered.

She also took a jibe at BJP slogans praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“At every bus stop, in every newspaper, on every TV channel, one can see that ‘Modi hai to mumkin hai‘ (‘everything possible with Modi at the helm’). Asliyat ye hai ki BJP hai to Rs 100 kilo ki pyaaz mumkin hai, BJP hai to 45 saal mein sabse zyada berozgari mumkin hai, BJP hai to 4 crore naukriyan nasht hona mumkin hai, BJP hai to 15,000 kisan ki atmahatya mumkin hai…(‘The fact is under the BJP, it is possible that onion sells Rs 100 a kilo, it’s possible that unemployment is highest in 45 years, it is possible to destroy 4 crore jobs. If the BJP is there, it is possible that 15,000 farmers commit suicide…’)”.

A combative Priyanka also raised the recent alleged torching of a rape victim in Unnao who subsequently succumbed to her injures at a Delhi hospital and remembered her father Rajiv Gandhi and his sacrifices.
