The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde on Tuesday stayed the implementation of the three agricultural laws until further orders. Simultaneously, the court constituted a high-level committee to remove the deadlock between the farmers and the government.
The committee will comprise experts including pro-market agricultural economists Ashok Gulati and Pramod Kumar Joshi, along with Anil Ghanwat of Shetkari Sangathana and Bhupinder Singh Mann, leader of one of the factions of the Bharatiya Kisan Union.
Several questions have been raised on the Supreme Court’s preferences for the farm laws committee, which apparently puts the Centre in an advantageous position, making matters more difficult for farmers. The Wire throws light on the profiles of these four experts.
