India Now Has More Than 30 Lakh COVID-19 Cases

There are 7,07,668 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country, which is 23.24% of the total caseload.

New Delhi: India’s COVID-19 tally moved past the 30 lakh mark, just 16 days after it crossed 20 lakh. On Sunday morning, the health ministry reported a single-day spike of 69,239 new infections, taking the country’s COVID-19 caseload to 30,44,940. The death toll stands at 56,706, after 912 new fatalities were reported.

India’s recorded spike on Sunday was the highest in the world.

According to the health ministry’s data, 22,80,566 people have recuperated in the country so far. The recovery rate stands at 74.90%.

COVID-19 cases in the country jumped from 10 lakh to 20 lakh in 21 days, while it had taken 59 days for the cases to cross the 10 lakh mark. It took 110 days for COVID-19 cases in the country to reach one lakh, while just 59 days more to go past the 10-lakh post.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 3,52,92,220 samples have been tested up to August 22, with 8,01,147 samples being tested on Saturday.

Across the world, confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection stand at 23,205,331. According to Johns Hopkins University, the US has the highest cases, with 5,668,105, followed by Brazil with 3,582,362 and India with 3,044,940. The US’s death toll stands at 176,362, Brazil has reported 114,250 deaths, Mexico 60,254 and India 56,706.

The global death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 800,000 on Saturday. Nearly 5,900 people are dying every 24 hours from COVID-19 on average, according to Reuters calculations based on data from the past two weeks that ended on Friday.

That equates to 246 people per hour, or one person every 15 seconds.

The rate of deaths is holding steady with it taking 17 days to go from 700,000 to 800,000 deaths ‒ the same time it took to go from 600,000 to 700,000.
