New Delhi: Two people have died in Bihar’s Siwan, allegedly after consuming spurious liquor. Five others are undergoing treatment.
Alcohol is prohibited in Bihar since 2016, but the state has seen a high number of deaths from consumption of toxic liquor in the aftermath of the ban.
The news agency ANI has reported that the two who died – Janak Bean and Naresh Bean – were residents of Bala village in Nabiganj. Both had complained of stomach pain in the night.
ANI quotes a Sub-Divisional Public Grievance Officer in Siwan, Abhishek Chandan, as having said that one of the two men were brought dead to the Siwan Sadar Hospital.
As many as 39 deaths were reported from Bihar’s Saran district just last month, between December 14 and 15, all allegedly caused by the consumption of spurious liquor. The incident led to outrage and back and forth in the Bihar assembly, with CM Nitish Kumar, doubling down on the prohibition he had enforced in the state by saying, “If someone consumes alcohol, they will die. The example is before us.”
