Despite being the world’s seventh largest producer of wool, the demand for Indian local wool, over the years, has been on a steep decline. With the influx of softer and cheaper wool from China, there are no takers for locally produced wool. A number of issues plague the local wool industry, affecting the livelihoods of lakhs spread across India.
The Wire was at Delhi’s Triveni Kala Sangam where a Desi Oon Festival was held from December 17 to December 20. A series of panel discussions shed light on the global and Indian wool industry, and the issues afflicting those whose lives are intertwined with the industry in India.
