There is an impression among governments that internet shutdowns stop violence from spreading. Local police authorities have tried to use the tool freely.
But there is enough research to show that this does not happen – instead, violence actually increases, says Raman Chima, head of the Asia Pacific Region for Access Now, a global body working for digital rights, in a podcast interview to Sidharth Bhatia. Chima, who is a lawyer, says India has become the global leader in Internet shutdowns.
He also warns that citizens should be alert about their data privacy. “There are many ways this can be achieved,” he says. The Indian government is delaying privacy laws.
