UK Reports Record Daily COVID-19 Cases With Omicron Spreading Rapidly

One Dead, 50 ill Due to Suspected Food Poisoning in Assam Village

Diphu: An 8-year-old girl died and over 50 others were taken ill due to suspected food poisoning in Arlangpira village in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, an official said on Friday.

All of them had attended a religious function at the house of a villager, where they were served tea and biscuits, he said.

The attendees soon started complaining of stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhea-like symptoms, following which they were taken to Bokajan Civil Hospital, where the minor girl died, the official said.

Local authorities visited the village and assured an enquiry into the incident, he added.

Rajinikanth Hospitalised After Severe Blood Pressure Fluctuations

The superstar and new politician has tested negative for COVID-19 and is under observation.

Hyderabad: Superstar Rajinikanth was on Friday admitted to Apollo Hospitals here as he was suffering from severe blood pressure fluctuations, the hospital said in a statement.

He was shooting for a movie here for the past 10 days and had isolated himself and is being monitored closely after a few people on the sets tested COVID-19 positive.

The 70 year-old actor, however, tested negative.

“Mr Rajinikanth has been admitted in the hospital today in the morning…Though he did not have any symptoms of COVID-19, his BP showed severe fluctuations and needed further evaluation for which he has been admitted to the hospital,” Apollo Hospitals said.

He will be investigated and monitored closely in the hospital till his BP settles down before being discharged, it said.

Apart from fluctuating blood pressure and exhaustion, he does not have any other symptoms and is “haemodynamically” stable, the statement said.

TDP supremo and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu wished the actor a speedy recovery.

“Deeply concerned about superstar @rajinikanth after hearing the news of him being admitted to a hospital today. Wishing him a speedy recovery and good health!” he said in a tweet.

Actor and Jana Sena founder Pawan Kalyan in a statement hoped that Rajinikanth would come out healthy with the blessings of Mahavatar Babaji whom the superstar considers as Guru.

Rajinikanth had earlier arrived here for the shoot of his latest film Annaatthe, which has been halted after four of the film’s crew members tested positive for COVID-19.

Sun Pictures, the production house, said on Wednesday that the top actor and other crew members have tested negative for the virus.

The shoot for the movie, directed by Siva and featuring Keerthy Suresh, Nayanthara, Khusbu and Prakash Raj among others, resumed here on December 14.

Militants Attack Security Forces in Srinagar, Two CRPF Personnel Killed

Five CRPF personnel, including an ASI, were injured in the firing, a police official said.

Srinagar: Two CRPF personnel were killed and three others injured as militants attacked a security forces party in Nowgam area of the city here on Monday, police said.

Militants fired upon a security forces party near Kandizal Bridge in Nowgam this afternoon, a police official said.

He said five CRPF personnel, including an ASI, were injured in the firing.

The injured personnel were taken to the Army’s 92 base hospital here, where the doctors declared two of them brought dead, the official said.

He said the deceased personnel have been identified as constables Shalinder Pratap Singh and Dhirendra Kumar Tripathi.

The official said the three injured personnel ASI Gorakh Nath, constable Kirgain and constable James were hospitalised and their condition is stated to be stable.

The area has been cordoned off and a hunt has been launched to nab the attackers.

Senior officials have rushed to the spot and further details are awaited, he added.

Former Union Minister Arun Shourie Hospitalised

The 78-year-old former Union minister fainted late Sunday night following which he was rushed to the Ruby Hall Clinic.

Pune: Former BJP leader and noted journalist Arun Shourie was admitted to a hospital in Maharashtra’s Pune city after he fell ill, a doctor attending him said on Monday.
