Western Uttar Pradesh, known colloquially as ‘Jatland’, has been in the headlines since the farmers’ agitation. The unification of Jats and Muslims, relations between whom were tense after the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, has strengthened the position of the Jat-dominated Rashtriya Lok Dal in the region. The party has entered into an alliance with Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party. For the past few elections, the region has been an undisputed bastion of the BJP. The Congress, once the dominant force in the state, will hope to prove itself once again.
