An official document has been in the Sri Lankan Finance Ministry’s records since November 2021. In it, Sri Lanka’s electricity board chief says that a project by Adani Group in Sri Lanka was backed by the Indian government and was treated as a proposal from the Indian government. It was, in fact, seen as a ‘G-G’, i.e. a Government to Government proposal.
The electricity board chief has also talked about how Prime Minister Narendra Modi allegedly put pressure on Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to give a green signal to Adani’s deal. As the government remains busy firefighting the outrage against Agnipath and with the Maharashtra political crisis, this is a big story that also demands answers from the Modi government.
