Nine Killed in Rain-Related Incidents in UP, Six in Gurugram; UP Schools Remain Shut on Monday

The national capital received the second highest rainfall since 2007 in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday, the IMD said.

New Delhi: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, October 9 claiming at least nine lives and throwing common life out of gear.

Authorities of a dozen districts, including Lucknow, Aligarh, Meerut, Gautam Buddh Nagar, and Ghaziabad, ordered closure of schools on Monday, October 10 in the wake of heavy rains. In Aligarh, all schools up to class 12 will remain closed till October 12, officials told news agency PTI.

Similarly, all schools across Noida and Greater Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar will stay closed on Monday on account of excessive rainfall, according to an official order. The closure will be applicable for all classes up to class 12 and to all schools across boards, the order stated.

The Lucknow district administration also issued an advisory for school closure on Monday.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state recorded an average of 22.5 millimeter rainfall on Sunday – which is 2396% more than the ‘long period average’ (LPA) for the day. Since October 1, the state has recorded 92.3 mm rainfall – which is 500% more than the LPA of 14.4 mm.

IMD officials have issued forecast of more rains across the state in the next 24 hours.

In Gorakhpur, two persons were killed when a boat capsized in the Rapti river. In Ghaziabad, a 90-year-old woman was killed after a house collapsed due to rains, police told PTI.

In another incident, a resident of Akalpur village that comes under the Masuri police station area was killed after being buried under the rubble of a dilapidated house, police told the news agency.

In Hardoi, two farmers were killed after being struck by lightning. In Sitapur district, an 11-year-old girl was killed after being struck by lightning. In Etawah’s Jaunpur village, a 75-year-old woman was killed after being hit by lightning, police said.

In Bulandshahr, a 14-year-old boy was killed and several others were injured in three incidents of house collapse caused due to heavy rains.

At least six others were injured in similar incidents reported from Dibai and Usadpur areas of the district.

In Balrampur, two teenagers were swept away in flood waters. Body of one of the boys, Zishan (16), has been recovered while efforts are on to search for the other,circle officer Radha Raman Singh told PTI.

Separately, six children died due to drowning in a rainwater-filled pond in Gurugram’s sector 111 the city, news reports said.

Delhi-NCR has been receiving incessant rain for the past three to four days. The national capital received the second highest rainfall since 2007 in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday, the IMD said. It recorded 21.8 mm of rainfall till 8.30 am on Monday morning, with the minimum temperature settling at 19.2°C, two notches below the season’s average.

Traffic snarls were reported from across the national capital due to waterlogging.
