Heavy Rains Batter Telangana, 15 People Dead

Nine persons died when a boundary wall collapsed in Mohammedia Hills in Bandlaguda of Hyderabad due to heavy rains in the past two days.

New Delhi: At least 15 people have died in Telangana following incessant rains that lashed several parts of the state, leading to waterlogging on roads and inundation of some low-lying areas.

The state government has declared a holiday on Wednesday and Thursday for all private institutions, offices, and non-essential services within Outer Ring Road in view of the rains.

People were advised to stay indoors for the next two days as more rains are expected in the state.

Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao and Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav held an emergency meeting with senior officials and reviewed the rescue and relief operations in the city.

Nine persons died when a boundary wall collapsed in Mohammedia Hills in Bandlaguda due to the heavy rains here in the past two days, Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted on Wednesday.

“Hyderabad Rains, I was at a spot inspection in Mohammedia Hills, Bandlaguda where a private boundary wall fell resulting in the death of nine people & injuring two. On my from there, I gave a lift to stranded bus passengers in Shamshabad, now I’m on my way to Talabkatta & Yesrab Nagar,” he tweeted.

Some boulders fell on the compound walls of two houses, killing eight people on the spot and injuring four persons. The injured are being treated, a police official said.

In a separate incident, a 40-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter died after the roof of their old house collapsed in Ibrahimpatnam area here on Tuesday due to heavy rains, police said.

Normal life was thrown out of gear at various places in Telangana on Tuesday as heavy rains lashed the state, leading to water-logging in different localities in Hyderabad and other parts of the state.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad.

According to reports, roads in busy areas of the city like Himayat Nagar, Basheerbagh, Nampally, Lakdi Ka Pul, Mehdipatnam, Toli Chowki, Gachibowli, Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills on Tuesday. Several residents had to be evacuated overnight, especially in Tolichowki, as incessant rains lashed Hyderabad, submerging roads, vehicles and flooding houses.

Other parts of Telangana, like the Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts also received heavy rainfall since Monday night. The government hospital in Madhira town of Khammam district was flooded with rainwater.

Gates were opened at several reservoirs and dams in the state. The state government has declared holidays until Thursday.
