Mumbai: At least four persons have been killed and several injured in a blast that occurred at the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) plant in Uran, over 50 kilometres from Mumbai.
“Three people from the CISF fire control unit team and one ONGC staff member died in the blaze,” Navi Mumbai’s commissioner of police Sanjay Kumar confirmed. Kumar further added that injured persons have been shifted to a hospital nearby. More people are feared to be stuck inside the plant.
The ONGC said that there was no impact on oil processing and that the gas was diverted to its Hazira plant in Surat district of Gujarat.
The fire broke out around 7 am in one of the gas processing plants of the ONGC. The corporation’s spokesperson has confirmed that the fire was brought under control within two hours. Roads leading to the plant have been condoned of as a safety measure.
Soon after the fire was reported, several fire tenders from ONGC, Dronagiri, JNPT, Panvel and Nerul were rushed to the spot.
At present, ONGC said that efforts are made to cool the processor down and that there was no impact to the oil processing inside the unit.

Nearly 22 fire brigade tenders, including that of the ONGC, Navi Mumbai civic body and other agencies, were at the spot, a police official said.
The injured persons were admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment, he said, adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
