According to local media reports quoting the police, the two-wheeler was driven by the jail official, Probin D. Sangma, while the constable, Probat R. Marak, was riding pillion when it had a head-on collision with Hek’s son’s car, a newly-bought Mercedes with a temporary number, in Shillong’s Fourth Furlong Tri-junction. While Marak was declared dead by doctors at the Shillong Civil Hospital, Sangma is said to be in a critical condition at the Northeast Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences.

Though the minister’s son was arrested by East Khasi Hills police, on April 10 he was released from custody as the police said Marak’s family didn’t file an FIR.

Davies Marak, the district police chief, told reporters, “There is no need to produce Nongsiej in the court as it is a bailable offence and police are competent enough to give him bail as long as he is cooperating and since the family was not filing any FIR, the police took up the case on suo moto basis.”

According to local media reports quoting Golapara superintendent of police Amitava Sinha, the incident took place in Aolguri area of the district under Krishnai police station. The 22-year-old woman was reportedly waylaid by the youths, said to be drunk, to seek an explanation for being seen with a man even after she was engaged to be married to someone else. They later beat them up and particularly targeted the woman.

The police registered an FIR after the video was widely circulated and took into custody six people involved in the incident on April 8 and six more on April 9.  Both the woman and her assaulters belong to the Garo community.

Sinha told reporters that the police is conducting further enquiry to find out the involvement, if any, of more persons in the case.

The procession with the banner “Ananda Shobhajatra” saw a large number of people, including artists, school students, academics and social activists of Tripura taking part in it holding mini flags of the country besides Bangladeshi officials and their families.

Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commissioner Shakhawat Hossain told local reporters that similar events were held in around 80 Bangladeshi diplomatic missions across the world to celebrate the UN body’s categorisation. Hossain said Bangladesh was included in the developing country categorisation based on fulfilment of three criteria required for it — per capita income, human resource development and economic uplift.

Besides a panel discussion held at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan to highlight Bangladesh’s accomplishment in different human and economic indexes, a floral tribute was paid to the father of that nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Hossain thanked India for “playing a great and historic role” in the success and independence of Bangladesh.
