Raja Rai has been accused of pouring kerosene over the woman and setting her on fire after she managed to resist his attempt to rape her on December 7.

New Delhi: A 23-year-old woman in Muzaffarpur, Bihar who was set on fire earlier this month after resisting a rape attempt succumbed to her injuries on Monday night. She was being treated at the Apollo Burn Hospital in Patna.

Raja Rai, son of land broker Raj Kishor Rai, has been accused of pouring kerosene over the woman and setting her on fire after she managed to resist his attempt to rape her on December 7, according to Hindustan Times. Raja and his alleged accomplice, Mukesh Kumar, were arrested a week after the attack.

Raja had allegedly been stalking the woman, who was his neighbour, for a while. According to the victim’s mother, she had stopped attending coaching classes because of his harassment.

Before cremating her body, the woman’s family wants an assurance from the Bihar chief minister, Nitish Kumar, that justice will be done. “We want the chief minister to come and assure us of justice in the case,” Hindustan Times quoted her brother-in-law as saying.

He has also asked for security for his family and for his wife, the victim’s sister, to be transferred to Muzaffarpur so that she could be with her two minor children, who were witnesses in the case. She works as a auxiliary nursing midwife at Bairiya in Sitamarhi at the moment.

The victim’s family had earlier asked for her to be shifted to a speciality facility in Delhi. The Muzaffarpur district administration said it would bear the costs of her medical expenses.
