Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Human Rights Commission on May 3 ordered a probe into the brutal rape and murder of a Dalit law student in Perumbavoor be handed over to the Crime Branch.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the case on the basis of media reports, commission Chairman Justice J.B. Koshy issued a directive to the director general of police (DGP) of Kerala.

The commission in the order – marked to the state DGP, Kochi range inspector-general of police (IGP) and Ernakulam rural superintendent of police (SP) – said that the crime branch should submit the progress of the probe to the commission on May 30 by 11 am.

The release from the commission also said that efficient police personnel should be entrusted with the investigation of the case like it was carried out in the murder of a Delhi student in 2012.

The commission also directed the DGP that since the May 16 elections are only days away, the investigation in the case should be completed as early as possible before evidence was lost.

Police had said that according to the post mortem report, the student was subjected to rape and brutal assault using sharp-edged weapons before being murdered at her small wayside house in Ernakulam district on April 28.

Two persons have been detained so far in connection with the case.
