Srinagar: A Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was Saturday killed by the security security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Babgund area of the south Kashmir district during the night after inputs of the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militant fired upon the forces who then retaliated.

In the ensuing gunfight, the militant was killed in the morning, the official said.
He said the slain militant has been identified as Sabir Ahmad Dar who belonged to HM outfit.
Some arms and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site, the official said, adding the operation has been called off.
Low voter turnout
Meanwhile the ongoing civic polls in J&K witnessed a low voter turnout with only 1.3% of the total 1.62 lakh electorate in the first three hours of polling, reported PTI.
Similarly the Srinagar Municipal Corporation witnessed 0.8% turnout of the total 1.53 lakh voters and only 100 votes were polled in the initial few hours.

Massive security arrangements were put in place to conduct smooth polls amid rising social unrest. Additional poll staff were staff were deployed at polling stations with large number of voters.
National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and CPI(M) have boycotted the polls due to the legal challenge to Article 35A of the constitution in the Supreme Court.
