Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s Delhi Office Vandalised

Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress leader has demanded a discussion on the Delhi riots in parliament.

New Delhi: Four unidentified men allegedly vandalised the Delhi office of Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and abused his staff on Tuesday evening, police said.

According to an Indian Express report, the four men had come over to Chowdhury’s office around 5:30 pm and insisted on meeting him. When the staff present in the office asked who they were and their contact details, the men allegedly attacked the staff and vandalised the office.

Chowdhury’s private secretary Pradipto Rajpandit has filed a complaint with the Tughlaq Road police station and a probe has been initiated.

Attack on Chowdhury’s residence is particularly peculiar since earlier in the day, he had demanded an urgent discussion in parliament on the riots that engulfed northeast Delhi. As many as 47 persons were killed and over 200 injured in the violence. According to a Hindustan Times report, one of Chowdhury’s relative was also injured in the Delhi riots.

Chowdhury has also been a vocal critic of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Reports also said that the attackers threatened Chowdhury with dire consequences before leaving. “They vandalised the office and destroyed many files and important papers. One of the files of the Public Accounts Committee [PAC] was also destroyed,” Pradipto Rajpandit told HT.

Chowdhury has been representing the Berhampore Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal since 1999. He is also the chairman of the PAC.

Deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Eish Singhal told Hindustan Times that a complaint has been received. “We are enquiring into the matter,” he said.
