Telangana: 17-Year-Old Student Found Dead in College Hostel

A child rights organisation Balala Hakkula Sangham has filed a complaint with the Telangana State Human Rights Commission, seeking action against the college.

Telangana: On Tuesday, 17-year-old Sandhya Rani was found dead in her hostel room at Narayan Residential College, located in Velimela, Sangareddy district. A child rights organisation, Balala Hakkula Sangham, has filed a complaint with the Telangana State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), seeking action against the college.

The college management, according to the complaint, has said that it was a suicide but the parents claim that their daughter had called them a few days before her death to complain about severe fever, News Minute reported. Balala Hakkula Sangham has argued that the college management needs to be probed for negligence.

The parents filed a complaint against the college management alleging that they were not informed about their daughter’s illness and that proper treatment was not provided. A case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the private college management on Tuesday.

The organisation has also sought action against a policeman, who allegedly kicked the student’s father, while he and other students were taking her body from the mortuary to the college to organise a protest.

“We earnestly pray that the Commission issues directions to the Superintendent of Police of  Sangareddy, to initiate action against the policeman who kicked the parents of the deceased girl in an inhuman way, and also to the Secretary of the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) to initiate action against Narayana Junior College, holding them responsible for the death of the student, due to their negligence,” the complaint stated.

The video of the father being kicked by the policeman has now gone viral.

As a result, Sangareddy police issued a statement saying they have take a serious view of the incident and that an enquiry has been ordered. The constable who kicked the girl’s father, Sridhar, has been transferred to the AR (armed reserve) headquarters.

Achyuta Rao, an activist with BHS, says that their organisation wants that the policeman be “removed from his service for his inhuman act”.

Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Mahender Reddy and Minister K.T. Rama Rao tweeted about the incident.

A case has been registered against the students on charges of unlawful assembly, obstructing public servant from discharge of his duty and vandalism, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
