New Delhi: The wife of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was detained in January under the National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly making inflammatory statements during an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest, has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the Allahabad high court expressing concern over the security of her husband in the Mathura jail in Uttar Pradesh.
According to a report in News18, Khan’s wife, Shabista Khan, has requested security for her husband and claimed that his life might be in “danger”. She also claimed, in the letter which had been marked to additional chief secretary home Uttar Pradesh and DG Jail Uttar Pradesh, that her husband was being treated “inhumanly” and was being “mentally harassed”.
“I met my husband Dr Khan in Mathura Jail. I came to know that there is a life threat to him. He is being mentally harassed inside and was not even given food for five days after he was brought to jail. I fear that he might be killed inside the jail. I have requested Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court to ensure his security,” she said.
Khan had last month raised apprehensions in a Mumbai court about being killed in an “encounter” by the Uttar Pradesh police after claiming that he had been “falsely” implicated in the case by them.

Khan, a paediatrician, was suspended from the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in 2017 after the death of over 60 children in less than a week. He was also arrested and jailed. He has since alleged that the Yogi Adityanath government had implicated him in the case, even though he reportedly played an instrumental role in saving several children at the hour of crisis.
In September last year, Khan was cleared of all charges and has demanded full reinstatement.
In January, Khan was initially arrested under charges of giving a provocative speech during a protest against the CAA and NRC at Aligarh Muslim University and was later charged with the National Security Act.
Last week, Khan’s maternal uncle, Nusrullah Ahmad Warsi, was shot dead in front of his house at Bankatichak in Rajghat area here, police said on Sunday. In 2018, Khan’s brother was also shot at three times, but he survived.
