With soaring unemployment rate, informal workers in India continue their struggle for survival, especially at a time when the country is facing a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yaqut Ali was in Noida’s Labour Chowk to speak with daily wage labourers who wait there every day, not knowing whether they will be able to find work or not. It’s a hand-to-mouth situation for most of them.
One of the labourers told The Wire that despite the rise in fuel prices and essential commodities, wages have remained the same as last year. He has a college degree in IT (electrical) but is not able to find a salaried job.
Struggling to survive on a daily basis, the labourers questioned the government on its “vote bank” politics, rising inflation, joblessness and stagnant wages.
