The Man Who Ran Two States: Former UP, Uttarakhand CM N.D. Tiwari Passes Away

Tiwari, who died after a prolonged illness on his birthday at the age of 93, is the only Indian politician ever to have served as chief minister of two states.

New Delhi: Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari died on his birthday at a private hospital here Thursday after prolonged illness, doctors said. He was born on October 18, 1925, and was 93.

Tiwari had won the distinction of being the only Indian politician to have served as chief minister of two states.

Tiwari was admitted at the Max Super Speciality Hospital and died at 2.50 pm, the doctors said. The politician was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital on October 26. He was suffering from fever and pneumonia. A team of doctors was monitoring his condition in the ICU round the clock.

Tiwari had joined the Congress in 1963 and in 1965, he became an elected MLA from Kashipur. He eventually went on to become a member of parliament and the finance minister in the Chaudhary Charan Singh government.

The veteran leader has also served as a Union minister in several Congress governments and as the Andhra Pradesh governor between 2007 and 2009. His tenure came to an end when he resigned after a sting operation caught in him in a compromising position with three women at Raj Bhavan.

He also served as Uttarakhand chief minister and was the only CM of the state to have completed a full five-year tenure.
